ANIMAL RIGHTS

ETHICS

WHAT ARE ANIMALS RIGHT FOR?

We need animal rights so we do not subconsciously put animal species in different, higher or lower categories. For example, mice get tested on and cows get used for milk. Dogs on the other hand, get cuddled and fed by us. Is this fair? At the end of the day they are all living and breathing animals.

HOW CAN WE CARE ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WE DO NOT SEE

A few months ago, there was this video on Instagram going viral of a man abusing a dog. The man was kicking it, beating it and in the end, killing it. Most of us were shocked after seeing that video. If it were a cow who got beaten up, would people have reacted the same? Every day in the meat industry thousands of animals all over the world, get abused: But, not many people care about them. There are plenty of slaughter houses killing animals every day. It is easy to simply look away as it does not really affect our daily lives. Maybe, if we had cows and pigs as pets we would have a real connection to them and would think differently.
Society has told us to have one animal that we love and care about, and another one for lunch. Some might say “Meat tastes too good not to eat it!”. But, are five seconds of having something tasty in your mouth, worth for an animal to get killed?

PIGS

Pigs are more intelligent than one of our favourite pets, such as the cat. Pigs can recognise their reflection, just like dolphins and elephants. They can even learn their own names and will come to you if you call them, just like dogs. Pigs can also dream just like us humans can ♡.

AN UNNECESSARY TRADITION

On the 27th of November 2017,in basel, two pigs got slaughtered in public. It is an old tradition which always takes place just before winter. Some people who disagree with this tradition, protested at the entrance of the event. A lot of people still enjoyed themselves and even took pictures and videos.

THE JOURNEY OF THE MEAT IN YOUR PLATE

Most pigs get born and raised in pig farms where they are kept in dark and tight spaces until they either are fat enough to get killed or die slowly and painfully of waekness. Many pigs lose their minds because of the poor conditions and start spiraling. The sick pigs which die lay around in the cages and eventually get thrown away in bins with others. Pigs can reach the ages of 15 years. Unfortunately, they only get to live for 6 months as they get transported to the slaughter house to get killed.

WHAT ABOUT ORGANIC MEAT (BIO-FLEISCH)?

Some people buy organic meat to get rid of the guilt of eating an animal because they think they get treated better there. That is true on some level, but how much better are the conditions in comparison to the conventional animal farms?

Swiss organic-meat animals get to go outside on fields to graze. The only big difference which defines the “bio-Fleisch” is what they put in the food that they give them. Organic animal feed, which has to make up at least 95% organic food for it to count as organic animal feed. According to the head of corporate communications of «Bio Suisse» they try to give the animal the longest lifespan they can. Even if the organic-farm animals get treated better than the conventional farm animals, in the end all of them get slaughtered the same way and get transported in the same filthy van where they get brought to the same slaughter house.

WIESENSCHWEINE

Oliver Hess is the founder and CEO of this organisation. Since 2009 he has been committed to the project to improve the quality of livestock farms. He bought a farm and its animals of a farmer who was keeping his animals under very poor conditions. He changed the stables so that the pigs could walk around and have two separate spaces so they won’t lay in their own excrement all day and have a more sanitary environment. He also started to build a fence around the farm so that the animals could walk around freely on the fields and see sunlight and breath in the fresh air.

Oliver Hess said that animals that never have had the chance to run around and use their muscles, do not have much blood flowing through their legs which can result to chewy and bad meat. Link: https://www.wiesenschwein.ch/

"MUTTERTIERHALTUNG"

This is an organisation which its goal is to improve the cruelness of taking away the calf of a mother cow and instead letting them grow up by their mothers side.
