For as long as we can remember, we thought eating meat is natural. We’ve done it since the stone age. Resent studies show that our bodies are not designed to chew or process meat right.
If you compare your teeth to a carnivores and herbivores, our teeth have more similarities with the teeth of herbivores. The teeth of humans are flat and good for grinding. The teeth of carnivores are sharp and can easily tear meat apart.
Another big different is that the intestine of the herbivore is much longer and uneven as plants takes longer to digest to get all the nutrients, such as fibre. Carnivores have tube-like intestines, as meat nutrients take less time to get picked up. It also needs to get out of the body as fast as possible so that it won’t rot.
“Evidence from stable isotopes, faunal remains, and the paleopathology of human skeletons suggest that Neandertals consumed a low diversity diet centred on large and medium-sized terrestrial herbivores” - Quaternary international
FISH
It is said that the healthiest meat that you can get is fish. It is low on calories and is rich on OMEGA-3 fatty acids, these are good for bringing down inflammation. They also help prevent and manage heart disease e.g. it lowers blood pressure.
In spite of that, fish is the leading source of many toxic pollutants. In seafood there is a lot of mercury. Mercury is a natural element that is found in air, water and soil. As it is in water, it is found in fish too. Any exposure of it can cause serious health problems, especially in small children and infants.
RED MEAT
It has some important nutrients but you can get those from plants and other foods. However, it can cause Heart disease because it makes the body have more cholesterol.
Cholesterol is a substance which our bodies produces. It is important for our health, as it helps with the productions of different hormones. It also helps build cortisol which helps decrease inflammations. Even though it is essential for our body, too much of it isn’t great either, while eating red meat which has a lot of cholesterol and your body producing it as well, can lead to an overload of it. This can cause clogging of blood vessels which will prevent blood flowing to the heart and can trigger a heart attack.
It is not clear if red meat is a cause of cancer but, a lot of studies have shown that there is a pretty good chance that it can increase the risk of colorectal cancer. However, there is a study that claims that, the amount of red meat one ate, the earlier they would die.
WHITE MEAT
When talking about meat, it is said that white meat is much healthier than any other type of meat, as it has less fat and fewer calories.
Although, this isn’t necessarily true as the difference is so small, it barley exists. On one hand, In poultry meat, vitamins like, vitamin B6 and pantothenic and minerals like, iron, zinc and copper can be found. These are good and useful nutrients for our health. Doesn’t matter whether you are eating red or white meat, you still will end up with the cholesterol in your blood vessels, as mentioned above.
THE ENVIROMENT'S HEALTH
The animal livestock industry is the leading cause of global warming. It pollutes the air and uses the most water out of all the industries because you need water to plant grains to feed them, clean the cages and so on.
